Only 1 track left to ID! Spanish Dance No 5, Andaluza by ???

BIG thanks to Amelia and her keen ear in figuring out that this is a version of Enrique Granados' Spanish Dance No 5, Andaluza (originally a piece of chamber music written in 1898, later transcribed for the guitar, and generally considered as some of the most beautiful music in the guitar repertoire).

This version has been greatly slowed down, and with the presence of a large string section to dial up the emotion, I'm guessing that this is a version recorded for a more mainstream audience.

So here's the story...

In 1976, when my wife Kat was one year old, her father made a cassette tape of music recorded from the radio in Iran, while there on business. That's the cassette in the picture up there. I like how it says Stereo Disco on the label and how the music on it is anything but.

Her father would always play this tape endlessly in the car, on family trips to Ocean City, Maryland – it was his all-time favorite mixtape and was also Kat's first exposure to music.

This cassette was, until now, broken for some time. His birthday is coming up, so we thought it would be nice to mend the tape and transfer it's contents onto a CD. That's all done now, thanks to my trusty splicer block.

We're hoping to be able to identify the tracks on this cassette – even my father in law doesn't know, he just likes the music. So please have a quick listen to the tracks below. There's an entry for every track, complete with MP3. If you know any of them, or have a clue as to who it could be, please leave a comment.

Good luck and thanks for helping us out!

Nick & Kat

Greenfields by The Brothers Four

Kat was able to identify the first track from Side A pretty quick - Googling the words turned up a YouTube match. One down, sixteen to go.

E Voi Ballate by Adriano Celentano

Thanks to our friend Tom for helping us with this one... we've learned that Celentano has been a fairly well-known Italian entertainer over the years. He even has his own website.

Let Me Cry by Peppino Di Capri

Another fine YouTube music video to be viewed below.

Nights in White Satin by The Moody Blues

Well this was easy to figure out, and I believe it's the original full-length version from the album, with the "Late Lament" poem at the end.

Oh! Carol by Neil Sedaka

This was pretty easy to turn up too. Apparently the song is about his former girlfriend, Carol King.

In Un Fiore by Wilma Goich

Thanks to Little Jimmy Oldman from the Very Good Plus forum for IDing this one! The title of this song in English means "In a Flower".

Vita by Iva Zanicchi

This is Iva Zanicchi singing Vita. Big thanks to all the Very Good Minus peeps for confirming this!

Spanish Dance No 5, Andaluza by ????

The Green Leaves of Summer by The Brothers Four

So side B begins with another from The Brothers Four. I'm wondering how Kat's dad put this tape in order (since it was all taped live from the radio) because it's almost like he planned it this way...

If You Go Away by Jack Jones

First step was to identify the song. Second step was to Wikipedia it and go through the list of artists who had covered it (there's a ton, but I figured it wasn't Cyndi Lauper's version) and YouTube them. Man, YouTube is awesome for music! Check out the home made music video to this song below.

io ti darò di più (1966) by Ornella Vanoni

Thanks, Natasha, for helping us with this Italian gem...

Una Sera Con La Luna by Roberta Mazzoni

This sounds crazy, but Medlar once again came up trumps by pointing me to this webpage. There's a post by someone with FOUR of the tracks we're looking for! I can only guess that the tracks on this cassette were huge hits in Iran and thus all over the radio...

Dio Come Ti Amo by Gigliola Cinquetti

Another one turned up by Medlar, who has taken up the cause for tracking down the last remaining tracks! It also seems that many of the female Italian singers on this cassette each won the Eurovision Song Contest at some point in their careers.

House Of The Rising Sun by The Ventures

Thanks to Medlar over at Very Good Plus for identifying the band as The Ventures. Here they are playing it live – though a little faster, it's clearly them on the MP3!

You Were Always On My Mind - Elvis Presley

Obviously this is Elvis! Anyone know from which album this came from?

Historia de un Amor by Luis Alberto del Parana & Los Paraguayos

Some detective work undertaken by our friend Ian has turned up the song, swiftly followed by Sir Slim's confirmation that it was recorded by Luis Alberto del Parana & Los Paraguayos. Thank god for the Very Good Plus forum!

Mie Immagini by Peppino Gagliardi

Alright! That just leaves one more track to ID now...
